about the artist

Medicine and art have long been primary amongst my many passions...

I love to draw. I love to sculpt. I love to make things out of whatever comes to hand, especially the ordinarily overlooked which can become unique if I "simply" reconnect with the reflection and joy within my soul and be with the moment.

Kim de Vahl Baker

Sometimes this creative process comes easily but more often it's a struggle with the worldly, adult self that fears risking vulnerability... yet strip away that anxiety to reveal one's elemental strength and what I lay out in my art is a child's exhuberance for life.

Be it a pen, a piece of charcoal, a lump of wood or a camera, creating and sharing that energy is essential to my spirit.

My art work has been inspired by my many life journeys and where I now live.

The city born girl who loved camping holidays with her father where staring into a big night sky full of stars and waking to a crisp morning full of forest smells was such a joy... the young emergency department doctor who learned of human mortality and the cathartic balm of pub poetry... the sea change doctor whose work in mental health challenges her own... the confident country doctor who goes to East Timor to set up a mental health service and is amazed and humbled by the resilience and grace of the Timorese people she encounters... who returns to her town life of plenty and ease to realise that grace and resilience is about connectedness.

And so to the current journey, the tree change that brings her closer to what it takes to live... to make shelter, to find water, to collect firewood, to grow food with the seasons and to always take time to be in the moment... ever challenging, humbling and contenting.
